Sixty-seven years ago, a failed voyage to the Dark Continent brought with it a new plague. As the few surviving party members sailed back to the Known World, they brought with them a new type of plague. One that the world was not prepared for. Tucked away in the men’s cargo were spores of a dangerous fungus, the Zi-Zirath. The fungi was able to replicate quickly and the men did not fear them as they posed no threat to them. However, once the survivors reached the mainland, the spores of the fungi spread throughout their landing location. They sought out non-sentient creatures to attach themselves to. Once a spore was somehow ingested by the animal, often by found in the bodies of smaller animals, it would take root. Within days the spore would grow, forming in the base of the skull of the animal that was their host.
Depending on the size of the creature that they inhabit, the spore needed less than a week to fully develop on the body of the animal. The newly formed mushroom would gain its own semi-sentience. The fungi would gain control over that animal they grew on. Not only that but the fungi would itself spread its own spores frequently once it was fully developed. Any fungi that end up growing from this parent will join its hive like network. This has gone on since the Zi-Zirath first came to the Known World. The original spore is the main host and has queen like roll among the hive, controlling them as it wills. The current location of the main spore is unknown but it is believed to be in the Begerossé Union.
As the spores grew in number, humans begun to notice their presence. It was when the humans started to notice and become a threat to the fungi did it see them as a true enemy. One that threatened its existence. One that it must rid its world of. The beast became more and more violent. Legions of bears were seen roaming the streets of major cities. Attacking citizens. What were once beloved family pets, soon became some people's personal executioner. It was chaos.Hunters begun to step in but the more they pushed into the fungus’ territory, the more they found nature fighting them back. Overtime, the creatures that fought these hunters and lived begun to unlock the secret of nen. Though in a crude and animalistic way. Their abilities were not complex, but they were efficient.
These nen-cable fungi beasts had an alarming rate of progression in their skills. Soon more hunters were dispatched, only to once again cause a new bloom of the nen-cable fungi. As the years have gone on, humans have had to resort to their more scientific talents to keep the fungi at bay. Frequent napalm bombings, spraying of toxic chemicals, and flat out poisoning of the regions by the V5 have worked for the time being. They still are unable to go into these regions has easily as they would like but it fungi has rescinded in recent years. Placing itself in more of a defensive position.
People that have remained in the regions that are corrupted by the fungi are thought themselves to be tainted. Most of the world has a stigma towards them. Treating them as trash or dirty in nature. This is true for some of the denizens of these poor places. They’ve been subjected to many hardships within the last few decades. Their homes are overrun with monsters and the V5 often is bombing their homes.
