When it comes to one's Hatsu, it will fall into one of the six above categories; sometimes even multiple at once. Every person has a natural affinity towards one of the six different types of hatsu: enhancement, transmutation, conjuration, emission, manipulation, and specialist. What determines which you fall into is still left to speculation, some base it on personality others just on luck. The most sure-fire way to determine one’s hatsu type is by the water divination test. This is a simple test by placing a cup of water with either a leaf or piece of paper on top. How the water reacts to your nen will determine the category you fall into. Most of those that have unlocked nen fall into enhancement, transmutation, conjuration, emission, manipulation. Specialization on the other hand represents only 3% of the total nen-aware population.
It is best to base a Nen ability on one's individual aura type. Though it is possible for one to develop abilities outside of his primary aura type, one is typically less proficient at using those abilities. By creating an ability that one isn't suited for, one risks stagnating their potential by overloading their capacity for using Nen. Most Nen experts stick to creating a unique hatsu based on their primary aura type, typically only branching into the aura types most adjacent to their own. For example, an emission user would be better suited at using manipulation and enhancement, rather than conjuration or transmutation. It is thought that you can only fully master your natural aura type; though in the past certain people have been known to break this stigma and fully master multiple aura types.
